Stavros Theodorakis met Cem Özdemir, co-chair of the Greens in Germany. The two officials had the chance to talk about the collapse of coalition talks among CDU, FDP and Greens and how this can affect the Greek case.
Mr Özdemir pointed out that Greece should be glad about the developments and the fact that the “Jamaica” coalition failed, stressing that “if the major coalition of Christian Democrats/ Social Democrats is achieved, it will be more beneficial to Greece”. However, Mr Özdemir claimed that this would be a negative outcome for Germany, since another four years of governance of Christian Democrats/ Social Democrats would boost the far-right ideology. He actually said that CDU/CSU and SPD fell from 70% in 2005 to 53% today, wondering what would happen following a coalition.
Stavros Theodorakis and Cem Özdemir analyzed Macron’s and Juncker’s proposals over the future of Europe. Stavros Theodorakis said that there should be a common European defense policy, common policy on the refugee issue and a Minister of Finances for all eurozone member-states. Mr Özdemir agreed and confirmed that German politicians could negotiate the perspective of a common policy on defense and migration, but there will be objections on economic aspects. He said that “they will not agree on a common budget with countries hit by the financial crisis”.
Mr Theodorakis and Mr Özdemir promised to keep close ties, as alliances are now indispensable to the benefit of Europe.
